Family Beach Photo Session: What to Wear (and Why)
Planning a beach photoshoot? How exciting! 🌊 One of the most common questions I get is “What should we wear?” Don’t worry — this guide will make it simple, stress-free, and easy to follow.
Best Colors to Wear for Beach Photos
When it comes to beach photography, light and soft colors always photograph best. They reflect light beautifully, complement the sand and ocean, and flatter all skin tones.
🤍 Whites & Neutrals (Always a Win)
White and neutral tones are a timeless choice for beach sessions. They:
- Highlight the blues of the ocean and sky
- Keep you cool in warm climates
- Look clean, natural, and elegant
Think:
- Long, flowing dresses
- Two-piece matching sets
- Linen or cotton button-down shirts
- Neutral polos or lightweight tops
✨ All white never fails, but there is no need for everyone to wear all white. Mixing whites with soft neutrals creates a beautiful, balanced look.
🌸 Pastel Tones
If you’d like a bit more color, pastels are perfect. Soft shades photograph beautifully without overpowering the scene.
Great pastel options include:
- Soft pinks
- Light blues
- Lavender
- Aqua or turquoise tones
Tips for styling pastels:
- Avoid mixing pastels with neons or busy patterns
- Balance pastels with white or neutral pieces
- Example: pastel shorts with a white button-down, or a pastel dress paired with neutral accessories
Pastels give off summer, sunshine, and joy — perfect for beach photos.

Pick Two Main Colors
For families or group sessions, choosing two main colors works wonderfully. This keeps outfits coordinated without being too “matchy.”
Examples:
- Kids in one color, parents in another
- Men in neutrals, women in soft pastels
- Whites mixed with one accent color
Coordinated color schemes add visual interest while keeping the photos cohesive.
Dresses for a Beach Photoshoot
The best dresses for beach photos are maxi dresses that move with the wind. Flowing fabrics add movement and elegance to your images.
If you prefer:
- Shorter dresses or two-piece outfits are fine
- Avoid anything too short or too tight, as these can feel uncomfortable and limit movement
Comfort is key. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in your photos.

Hair Tips for the Beach
Beach sessions can be windy, so a little preparation goes a long way:
- Consider half-up or fully down hairstyles with front pieces pinned back
- Bring a hair clip or tie just in case
- Optional: light hair balm or serum for flyaways
Fun headbands or simple clips can also add a nice finishing touch.

Family Beach Outfits
The key to family beach outfits is staying within the same color palette. You don’t need identical outfits — just coordinated tones.
For families with young children, matching elements can be especially sweet:
- Mom & daughter in similar dresses
- Dad & son in coordinating shirts and pants

What Not to Wear đźš«
❌ Dark Colors
Please avoid:
- Black
- Navy
- Dark gray
- Dark green
Dark colors absorb light and don’t photograph well on the beach. While black may feel slimming in real life, it actually has the opposite effect in beach photos.
Light colors reflect light and create a softer, more flattering look.
❌ T-Shirts for Men
Regular t-shirts do not photograph well.
Instead, men should wear:
- Linen button-down shirts
- Cotton button-down shirts
- Lightweight polos in light or neutral tones

❌ Neons & Bright Reds
Avoid neon colors and bright reds.
Why?
- Neons reflect harsh color onto skin tones
- Bright red can overpower images, especially at sunset, and create unwanted color casts on the face
If you love red, opt for:
- Muted red
- Soft rust
- Burnt orange
Still, pastels and neutrals are always the safest choice.
